3 Ways To Pump Up Your Portfolio

This post is for my fellow photographers! Here are 3 tips for having a strong, stand-out portfolio.

1. Create a styled shoot.

Aren’t attracting your ideal client (yet)? Create stylized shoots. What would your ideal client look like, how would they dress, and where would they choose to have their photos taken? You can cast models or look for real couples online. I prefer to use real couples because I like genuine chemistry. Recently I needed everyday looking females for a personal project and asked on Facebook if anyone was interested in modeling. Or sometimes I actively reach out if I see someone on Facebook or Instagram that fits what I’m looking for. Recently I found this actress on Instagram. I liked everything she posted and I liked the way she looked, so I commented on one of her photos. Long story short, she’s now a good friend, and I have access to a model whenever I need one.

2. Take photos of things that are different or visually interesting.

I think the travel photography section of my portfolio looks really cool. *Toot toot (that’s me tooting my own horn). Yes, you must have photography skills, but I think what makes them cool to look at is that they are photos of unique things. If you have something that stands out or looks different, that will be a higher impact photo compared to something people see all the time.

I took this in Palau, Micronesia. More photos from that trip here.

3. Less is more. Cull, cull, cull!

The difference between a good photographer and a great photographer is the photos you showcase. Pick only the BEST of the best. Each photo should have a purpose in attracting your ideal client. My rule: You should be excited about each and every photo you choose to share. If it’s just “ok,” or if it “works,” don’t put it in there.
